A HIDDEN GEM IN DUBAI: ABU TAREK KOSHARY

A HIDDEN GEM IN DUBAI: ABU TAREK KOSHARY – LADIES WHO ONLINE

While walking one day in Barsha (during cooler weather), we noticed a board about free food on National Day. We were surprised to see the generosity of the person and noticed that the name outside was Abu Tarek Koshary, which was spelled like those mandi or full-of-meat places (we are a vegetarian family, by the way).

My husband and son teased me to go and ask if the restaurant had anything vegan-friendly, and I growled at them. I knew there wouldn’t be anything vegetarian, and the staff would probably laugh at me. But they still coaxed me. So I entered and asked with lots of innocence in my eyes, and you won’t believe what the staff told me! The food at Abu Tarek Koshary was completely vegan! Oh, I came rushing out with a takeaway menu.

It has been two years, and now we are regular customers. They have Koshary bowls, which includes pasta, spaghetti, rice, boiled chickpeas, and lentils that are served with fried onions and tomato gravy. It is a delight to find a complete meal in one bowl, which is priced for only 11 dirhams. That is a steal of a deal for a budget meal! The restaurant will even serve you some freshly made chickpea soup when you request it.

My kids also love the Sobia there, which is a coconut drink. And their takeaway meals are hefty in serving. All four of us couldn’t even finish one family bowl! It’s entirely an authentic Egyptian experience in Dubai.

Take note that finding seats can be a hassle on weekends and during cold months. But the good part is that the staff knows how to speak in  English (most of them), so it’s easy to talk to them.

As Koshary is in Barsha and very near to the Mall of the Emirates, it is easily accessible by metro. Parking can be an issue on weekends. But you can park by the mall and walk to the restaurant.

This was a hidden gem in Dubai, which we discovered through a joke. And I know there must be more places and more such stories like this one. If you can, please share them with us.

Until then, happy eating!
